Enable a circular economy for food packaging. 

Plastic is a bundle of materials with many economic and ecological advantages and is often used for food packaging. In order to reduce the plastic waste Evonik wants to enable the transition from a linear to a circular plastic value chain. In order to increase the recycling rates optimal sorting and recycling processes are required. In addition, simply designed mono material packaging is the key to avoid incineration of hard to recycle packaging. Heat seal coatings often play an important role for food packaging which come with heat sealable lid structures. Thus, they should be considered when designing a sustainable food packaging.

Enable sorting of plastic material coated with DEGACRYL® HS based coatings

DEGACRYL® HS binders can achieve high heat seal strengths already at low coating weight due to their unique hybrid methacrylic polymers composition. It is designed to have no impact on the sorting process by standard NIR technology and the respective plastic material can be assigned to the dedicated recycling stream.

Improve recycling efficiency by supporting mono material packaging

It is difficult or even not possible at all to mechanically recycle composite materials consisting of multi-layer films. Key to increase recycling rates is the use of mono material packaging. 

Here, also our DEGACRYL® HS grades can support. With our universal heat seal binders, it is possible to design a mono PET packaging of highest quality. Due to the direct adhesion properties on PET as well as great sealability against PET it is possible to substitute the widely used multilayer composites by mono material packaging. Our transparent heat seal binder even enables the design of transparent PET lidding, widely used for fresh food packaging.
